CHICAGO JAZZ

From the earliest practitioners to contemporary innovators, Chicago has shaped the evolution of jazz. Indeed, the history of the music can be traced from New Orleans up the Mississippi to Chicago where King Oliver brought his band, and a young Louis Armstrong rose to prominence. On the cityÕs west side the Austin High gang and Bix Beiderbecke charted their own unique courses. In the Õ50s and Õ60s tenor men Gene Ammons, Johnny Griffin, Ira Sullivan and John Gilmore held court and influenced countless players after them (Gilmore being John ColtraneÕs favorite tenor player). Reflecting the social upheaval of the late Õ60s and Õ70s, the music of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and the members of the AACMtoo k the spirit of Òfree jazzÓ and gave it a decidedly Chicago spin. While the Õ80s saw be-bop revivalism sweep the mainstream jazz scene, Chicagoans Von Freeman & Hal Russell continued to refine their deeply personal aesthetics. With the Õ90s came a new generation of young lions whose voices ushered in a new era of Chicago jazz; Ken Vandermark and Rob Mazurek chief among them in shaping the sound of the city. Helped by the cities' rebirth as a hot bed of innovation and their own distinct visions, the new century finds us with an abundance of musical riches. Fortunately, there are many labels and musicians tirelessly documenting todayÕs Chicago music, exposing our local talent to wider audiences and preserving their contributions to the evolution of jazz.
