George Van Eps / Once In A While -CD *Jump 12
Jazz CD Jump 12-06.

An amazing and unique jazz guitarist, George Van Eps' made his first recording in 1930. He was busy in the 30s playing with Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and recording with many including Red Norvo. In 1939 Van Eps switched to a seven-string guitar that he designed. After World War II Van Eps settled in the Los Angeles area busy in the film, radio and recording studios. Once In Awhile contains tracks from Van Eps' 1946-49 recordings for the Jump label. Most are trio sides with Eddie Miller on tenor saxophone and Stanley Wrightsman on piano including the 1946 title track, a song he re-recorded in 1949 with bass and drums being issued for the first time on CD here.

Evergreen Classic Jazz Band
Early Recordings 1915-1932

Jump 12-37

Formed in Seattle, in 1985, The Evergreen Classic Jazz Band plays lesser-known music of the `20s and `30s. For this album the band goes back even further in the teens, songs just about 100 years old. The ECJB has captured the style and essence of original performances, without rote replication. Reinterpretation of material originally done by larger groups is not easy, but the ECJB gets a big sound through fresh, distinctive voicings from the front line threesome, and tight, clear execution from the rhythm section. Leader Tom Jacobus plays some fine tuba and provides most of the musical arrangements. This 1995 session yielded 17 songs including "Stomp Off, Let's Go", "Apex Blues", "Ring Dem Bells" and "Stock Yards Strut". Contains more than a full hour of foot stomping joy.

Sims, Zoot / Compatability -CD
Jazz CD Jump 12-36 1955 session

Delmark has acquired the Jump label and this is the first of many re-issues. Originally issued as a 1955 10" LP under the leadership of trumpeter Hall Daniels the session features Dick Nash, trombone; Zoot Sims, tenor sax; Bob Gordon, baritone sax; Tony Rizzi, guitar; Paul Atkinson, piano; Rolly Bundock, bass; and Jack Sperling, drums. A top studio arranger Daniels wrote many scores for motion pictures and is also noted for his work with Les Baxter. Hall composed two originals for this session and wrote wonderful arrangements for two standards. The songs are "The Way You Look Tonight", "Nash-Ville", "You Don't Know What Love Is" and "Compatability" however there are as many as four varying takes of each song so there's over 55 minutes
